Maxime Lannay & Isabelle Delahaye, Arbois, Jura, France

Maxime Lannay and Isabelle Delahaye make expressive natural wines on a tiny domaine in the Jura, honest, energetic and uncompromising.

About the domaine

Maxime began his wine career at Domaine Villet, where he built his foundation in biodynamic farming. He then spent two years working with Alice Bouvot at Domaine de l'Octavin, one of the most influential names in the Jura. Isabelle, previously a sommelier at some of the finest establishments in France, joined in 2019. They met through Alice Bouvot and moved together to Arbois.

The vineyard

The domaine is exceptionally small: around 0.7 hectares spread across Arbois, Montigny-les-Arsures, Pupillin and Montmarin. The soils are a mix of blue and calcareous marl, typical of the Jura and the source of the unmistakable tension and acidity in the wines.

Grape varieties: Savagnin, Ploussard, Pinot Noir, Gamay and Seibel (also known as Rosette, an old hybrid variety).

All grapes are hand-harvested and sorted in the vineyard. Alongside their own vines, Maxime and Isabelle produce a négoce range, sourcing grapes from trusted vignerons in the Rhône, Languedoc and Alsace, always biodynamically farmed.

In the cellar

Maxime and Isabelle work exclusively by hand. They use an old traditional vertical press for a gentle, slow extraction. Fermentation is spontaneous with wild yeasts, bottling is done by gravity and the wines are never fined, never filtered and produced without any added sulphites.

The wines

The wines of Maxime and Isabelle are bursting with energy. They have character, a certain wildness and go beyond the beaten path. Not a polished Jura, but an honest, distinctive expression of terroir and place.
